Shadytree Books’ Creative Studio is the place to come when you feel your work in progress is close to its final stage. Proofreading is an important step to take before sending your project to the publisher or the printers.
You have worked long and hard, listened to your critique buddies, sent your work to an editor, written your final draft and now all you need is an extra set of fresh eyes to glean for spelling, typos, punctuation, grammar problems, and to check for any concerns about page layout or formatting.
The writing process has taught you that your work must be of a high standard to stand out from the crowd; making sure each word is polished and working hard will give you the professional edge the publisher is looking for.
Is Proofreading Necessary?
By the time you have redrafted and reread your project many times, it becomes increasingly difficult for your eyes to detect existing errors. No matter how many times you read through your script, you tend to miss them. Your eyes grow accustomed to the flow of text and see only what your brain expects to see.
You get one shot with a publisher. Are you willing to risk it? Once a publisher decides to read your project, do you want to deliver your best work? Do you want them to see you are serious and have taken the necessary steps to polish your work to a high standard? Imagine how you might feel if the one publisher you’ve had your heart set on gets hooked on your story and thoroughly enjoys it, yet second guesses its worth because of annoying errors and sloppy penmanship? Convincing the publisher how much you care about your manuscript by showing them you have taken the initiative to polish it to a high standard is an important step. If you want them to care about your work, you should at least show them you care about it too.
It is highly recommended that your documents are proofread before you send them to a publisher. Shadytree Books’ Creative Studio can help you with your proofreading needs.

“Debbie worked on proofing both The Veiled Heart and The Bound Heart for me. I was very pleased with the care and genuine respect she had for my manuscripts. Each story was covered in detail and anomalies identified right down to identifying inconsistencies in quotation mark fonts. As a writer and long standing teacher of creative writing she has an eye for editing, written expression and the beauty of language. I have no hesitation recommending her as a proof reader and although she has not copy edited for me I have absolute confidence she would have the skills and sensitivity a writer would be expecting.”

“I have worked with Deb to polish a series of short stories, now published. Throughout the process Deb was supportive, knowledgeable and very easy to work with. Without Deb’s help, I doubt I would have completed my work to a standard I was happy to share with the world.
Thanks Deb, you’re a star!”
